Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find X% of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 2400 is 2400 x 15 / 100 = 360. The first tab does this for you and shows the working.

How do I work out what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 150 is 45 / 150 x 100 = 30%.

How is percentage increase calculated?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Going from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase. A negative result means a decrease.

Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back where it started?

Each percentage applies to a different base. 100 rising 50% gives 150; 150 falling 50% gives 75, not 100. The third tab makes this easy to check.
